Strategy
Rodger is best understood as a extractor.
Rodger's passive ability is Detective.
Rodger's primary purpose centers on accelerating Research collection, with Ichor gathering as a secondary benefit. His slower pace actually helps newer players develop good stamina management habits, while his boosted Research gain makes him particularly valuable for players with incomplete collections. He makes a good training character since using him is most beneficial for new players, so the rest of his strategy should be considered with that context in mind.
Rodger's highlight stat is his 4-star Extraction Speed, allowing him to finish Machines noticeably faster than most Toons. His low Movement Speed is a significant downside, meaning finding and using Speed Items will help with traversing the Floor more effectively, though you may want to save them for emergencies. He is not the most efficient pure extractor compared to other Toons with that inclination, due to his research-seeking focus and difficulty navigating the map quickly.
His Detective Passive doubles all Research rewards from both Research Capsules and Twisted encounters. Standard Capsule rewards of 1% and Twisted encounter rewards of 5% become 2% and 10% respectively, making Rodger the most efficient Toon for completing Research on any given Twisted. However, this effectively renders him ability-less, similarly to Boxten. If you have no motivation to collect Research, Rodger is not the best Toon for the job. But if you do want Research, no other Toon surpasses him, as long as you have the teammates to back it up.
If using Rodger primarily to search for Research, Movement Speed Trinkets can help locate capsules before the Floor expires. Alternatively, Trinkets like Vee's Remote can be equipped to pass Floors faster and encounter more of your target Twisted. The Research Map Trinket helps you know where capsules are located so you do not waste Stamina going to empty rooms.
For Trinket combinations, Rodger has strong options in both Mobility and Extraction categories. For Mobility, Pink Bow enables Rodger to outrun all Twisteds except Twisted Pebble before Panic Mode, and can be paired with Speedy Shoes to outrun Twisted Pebble as well, Vanity Mirror to outrun every Twisted except Twisted Bobette during Panic Mode while assisting teammates, or Diary to avoid interfering with 3-star Stealth Distractors. For Extraction, the Magnifying Glass Trinket lets Rodger take full advantage of his 4-star Extraction Speed and 3-star Skill Check, and pairs well with Vee's Remote for quicker Floor progression, Participation Award to speed up Machine completion by maximizing Skill Check extraction, or Train Whistle to extract without being slowed by Twisted Finn.
Appearance
Personality
Rodger is a clever and logical Toon who carries himself formally and is generally polite and well-spoken. He is curious, observant, and deeply interested in solving cases and uncovering truth, which stems from his role as a detective. This drive leads him to frequently interrogate and conduct interviews with other Toons, sometimes coming across as nosy or even pushy. Such tendencies are evident in his interactions with Astro and Sprout, where he insists that uncovering truths is more rewarding than playing it safe and eagerly tries to reschedule follow-up questioning sessions even after being turned down. Despite his pushiness and dedication to his work, Rodger is by no means aloof and is actually quite caring toward his peers. In his dialogues he frequently compliments other Toons for their capabilities, inquires about their well-being, and even offers advice for calming down Boxten. He has reportedly adopted some of Glisten's personality traits, according to one of his dialogues with Eggson. In official artwork and doodles, Rodger appears to be photogenic, with his singular eye expressing happiness whenever he is looking at the camera.

Trivia
- A persistent rumor claims that having Rodger in a round reduces the chances of encountering Main Twisteds. This has been confirmed to be false.
- Before v0.4.1, Rodger had a bug where picking up a Research Capsule as him would not give 2% if you had not encountered the Twisted before.
- Players can see through the glass in Rodger's head to partially bypass Blackout fog, as Roblox's rendering engine works poorly with fog seen through transparent objects. Gigi's plastic lid has the same quirk.
- Assuming you enter a chase with a Twisted and collect their two Research Capsules, it takes 8 encounters with a Twisted to get 100% Research on them, or technically 7.2 encounters.
- Rodger's eye and lens render on top of certain visual effects, including stat boosts, usernames, and Ichor from Machines.
- His Introduction Card originally described him as a spyglass, which was later corrected to magnifying glass.
- Rodger's name is likely a reference to either Roger Bacon, the inventor of the magnifying glass, or the saying 'Roger that.'
- His magnifying glass head appears to be a circle, but the low-poly count on the 3D model turns it into an octadecagon, which has 18 sides.
- Rodger's interaction with Poppy reveals he is considering adding a monocle to his look.
- Rodger's tense dynamic with most of the Main Characters seems to stem from his interrogation attempts being considered pushy and obnoxious by them, but he gets along with Shelly just fine.
- A Q&A art stream revealed Rodger is not Toodles' father, but merely seen by her as a father figure. However, he still seems to go along with this, making sure to look after her and be someone to look up to.
- It was confirmed in the New Year QnA Stream that both Vee and Rodger do not have mouths and do not need to eat, but they can eat the in-game food items for gameplay purposes. Nothing related to this was said about the other mouthless Toons.
- Rodger is one of four Toons who has a skin designed by someone outside the development team (Ebony Detective), alongside Looey (Dapperly Festive), Goob (Special Spaghetti), and Yatta (Choco Cones).
- In v0.9.1, Rodger was given a buff where encountering a Twisted for the first time on the Floor would grant him 20 Tapes instead of the usual 5. This was later reverted in v0.9.4.
- Rodger is the first Toon whose corresponding Trinket (the Magnifying Glass) is the same species as him, the second being Coal.
- His Trinket is stowed in his torso when not serving as part of his Passive Ability animation, similar to how Vee's microphone is stowed in her head when not being used for an idle animation.
- The 8/10/2025 QnA Art Stream revealed that Rodger and Dyle are not related. This is further emphasized by Dyle revealing via Gossip that he is not allowed to talk to Rodger.
- Rodger is the last Toon with a teased optimization to actually receive one, with other Toons like Vee, Shelly, and Astro getting theirs prior to his in v0.13.14.
- Rodger had an old icon pose that resembled Boxten's information card pose, which was probably a placeholder before the developers could start working on it.
- When collecting Research, Rodger will inspect the Capsule with a small magnifying glass. This visual quirk was added in his optimization in v0.13.14.
- Rodger is one of the few Toons to have their default pose changed following optimization, since he originally had his hands in front of his chest and now has them behind his back similar to Tisha.
- The Ebony Detective skin was redone after his optimization, making it more distinct than just a recolor.
- Sometimes, when spawning or resetting in the lobby, Alpha Sleeper Rodger will lose his glass. This is the only Rodger skin this can happen to.
- Rodger appears to be ambidextrous. He uses his right hand to hold his magnifying glass and a flashlight in the Lights Out Investigation episode poster, while using his left hand to carry his briefcase and to extract when his Research-mobile skin is equipped.
- Rodger's Research-mobile skin is based on a popular joke within the fandom about Rodger's obsession with Research and the tendency for players to play as him when a new Toon or Event is released.
- It is highly likely Rodger knows all the Main Characters' full names, as he refers to them by their last name sometimes. Additionally, in Bobette and Toodles' interaction, Bobette is aware that Rodger knows her full name.
- Rodger is the second Toon to get a Code skin, the first being Yatta.
- Rodger's full icon and Introduction Card have design differences compared to his model, with the icon having a vest with a V-shaped bottom and his magnifying glass handle being smaller with a shorter strap.
