Research – Dandy's World Guide
Research is a progression mechanic in Dandy's World. Collecting Research is a requirement for unlocking certain Toons and Trinkets. Research Capsules spawn on Floors and encountering Twisteds also grants Research progress.
| Type | Progression Mechanic / Currency |
|---|---|
| Rarity | Guaranteed |
| Category | Currency |
| Research Capsule | Grants 1% Research (2% as Rodger) |
| Twisted Encounter | Grants 5% Research (10% as Rodger) |
Unlocking Research
There are two ways to obtain Research in Dandy's World. Research Capsules spawn two per Twisted on each Floor, awarding 1% Research on the corresponding Twisted. Each capsule visually indicates which Twisted it belongs to, so players can target specific Twisteds. Capsules are client-sided, meaning even if one player picks up a capsule it remains available for every other player in the lobby. This design removes competition and lets an entire team collect Research from the same capsules. Encountering a Twisted gives 5% Research, but this method is limited to once per Floor per Twisted — being chased by the same Twisted twice on the same Floor yields no extra progress. The Research is granted at the same time as Tapes, so listening for the Tape collection sound confirms the encounter counted. Importantly, you do not need to take damage to gain Research; simply being detected is enough. However, Stealth plays a role: if a Twisted is already chasing another player and your Stealth stat is higher than theirs, the Twisted will not detect you and you will not receive the encounter credit.
- Twisted Rodger appears as a fake Research Capsule that lacks the tapes wrapped around the middle. If picked up, he attacks and applies Confused III and Slow III. Unlike real capsules, his fake capsule is not client-sided — once one player triggers it, it disappears for everyone.
- Twisted Razzle & Dazzle and Twisted Rodger must be awake and the player must be in their line of sight to obtain encounter Research.
- Twisted Glisten and Twisted Connie are counted as encountered even if not in an aggressive state, but require being inside their aggro radius rather than just their sight line. If Twisted Glisten enters his aggressive state, normal Stealth mechanics apply.
- Twisted Blot is the only Twisted that does not give Research by going near him. Instead, you must approach the colossal hands that Twisted Blot summons from underground.
- Rodger gains double Research from all sources: Capsules give 2% and encounters give 10%. This is the only way in the game to modify the amount of Research gained per action.
Toons That Require Research
Several Toons have Research requirements that must be met before they can be unlocked. The required percentage and target Twisted vary by Toon, creating a tiered progression system. Four Toons — Scraps, Rodger, Astro, and Cocoa — are notable for requiring Research on a Twisted other than their own counterpart. Of these, only Scraps and Astro require Research on a specific different Twisted, while Rodger and Cocoa accept Research on any Twisted(s) in general.
- Every Main Toon requires 100% Research on their Twisted counterpart. There are currently no known exceptions to this rule.
- Scraps requires 50% Research on Twisted Goob, making her one of four Toons that need Research on a different Twisted than their own counterpart.
- Astro technically requires 5% Research on Twisted Dandy, obtained by encountering him once. This is the lowest Research requirement of any Toon in the game.
- Flutter requires 100% Research on Twisted Flutter — the first and only non-Main Toon requiring 100% Research on their Twisted counterpart.
- Brusha requires 25% Research on Twisted Brusha — the only Toon in the game requiring exactly 25%.
- Connie, Flyte, Gigi, Ginger, Glisten, Soulvester, Squirm, and Yatta all require 50% Research on their respective Twisted counterparts. Goob could technically count as well, since unlocking Scraps (who requires 50% on Twisted Goob) is a prerequisite for obtaining him.
- Rodger requires 50% Research on any Twisted — the first time a Research requirement was not specific to a single Twisted. This design fits his role as the Research-focused Toon.
- Cocoa requires 100% Research on 5 different Twisteds, the most demanding non-Main Research requirement in the game.
Research Strategy
For the fastest Research per Floor, play as Rodger, collect both Research Capsules for the Twisted you want to progress, and then encounter that Twisted. With Rodger's double bonus, this yields 4% from capsules plus 10% from the encounter for a total of 14% per Floor. At this rate, a full 100% can be completed in just 7 Floors where the target Twisted spawns plus one additional capsule pickup. Without Rodger, the standard rate is 2% from capsules plus 5% from the encounter, totaling 7% per Floor. That means 100% Research takes roughly 14 full Floors plus two extra capsules or one encounter. The Research Map Trinket is useful for locating capsules quickly, especially on larger or more complex Floor layouts. Players who want to Research multiple Twisteds simultaneously should prioritize Floors where their target Twisteds co-spawn, since each Twisted generates its own pair of capsules independently.
Trivia
Notable facts about Research from the Fandom wiki and community observations.
- Twisted Dandy and Twisted Dyle are the only Twisteds whose 50% Research descriptions do not feature any clear gameplay advice or ability hints.
- Most normal Toons that require Research on their Twisted counterparts are classified as Rare. Connie, Flyte, Ginger, and Soulvester are Uncommon exceptions (three of which are Event-exclusive), while Yatta and Brusha are Common-rarity exceptions.
- Twisted Rodger is the only Twisted who disguises himself as a Research Capsule.
- Twisted Blot is the only Twisted that does not grant encounter Research by going near him — players must approach the hands he summons instead.
- Using the "search Twisted" button in the Twisteds Menu and then deleting all text will display every Event Twisted in the game.
- Twisted Rudie and Twisted Eggson originally had in-game Research descriptions that differed from their Roleplay Mode descriptions. This inconsistency was corrected in patch v0.12.1.
- Research Capsules are among the few client-sided objects in Dandy's World, meaning they do not despawn when collected by another player.
FAQ
How do you get Research in Dandy's World?
Research is obtained by picking up Research Capsules (1% each, 2% as Rodger) that spawn two per Twisted on each Floor, and by encountering Twisteds (5% each, 10% as Rodger, once per Floor per Twisted).
What does 100% Research unlock in Dandy's World?
Completing 100% Research on a Twisted unlocks their Trinket at no cost. These Research Trinkets are generally more powerful than the ones available in Dandy's Store. Additionally, some Toons require specific Research percentages to unlock — for example, every Main Toon requires 100% on their Twisted counterpart.
What is the fastest way to complete Research in Dandy's World?
Play as Rodger to earn double Research from all sources. Collect both Research Capsules for your target Twisted (4% total as Rodger) and then encounter the Twisted (10% as Rodger) for 14% per Floor. At this rate, you can finish 100% Research in roughly 7 Floors plus one extra capsule. The Research Map Trinket also helps locate capsules faster.
