Appearance

This Trinket is depicted as large, wide, black or dark gray chunks of coal consisting of three pieces of varying sizes but similar appearances. One piece is large, another is tiny, and the last is minuscule, appearing to have broken off from one of the other pieces. The smallest piece rests between its larger neighbors. Coal was added on January 10, 2025, alongside Festive Lights, Peppermint Icing, and Toy Kit as part of the Christmas Event Twisted Trinket batch.

Strategies

Coal is an overall bad Trinket as it does not provide any benefits, therefore its usage should be avoided altogether. Both the Stealth reduction and the Movement Speed penalty work against you in every normal game scenario. If you want to lower your Stealth for distractor purposes, Scrapbook does the same job without touching your speed at all, making it strictly superior.

The one scenario where equipping Coal might be mildly viable is if you are playing as a Toon with very high Movement Speed and high or average Stealth, such as Pebble or Razzle & Dazzle on odd Floors, and you intend to act as a dedicated distractor. However, not even Dog Plush can fully offset the speed debuff. Pairing Coal with Dog Plush still leaves you with a -1% Walk Speed debuff alongside the full -10% Run Speed penalty, meaning you are slower in every situation that matters. Run Speed is what saves you during actual chases, and losing 10% of it is dangerous on higher Floors where Twisteds close gaps quickly.

If you are really looking for a challenge, consider using Coal in combination with Brick while playing as Shrimpo, Soulvester, or Connie. These three Toons already have low Movement Speed, so stacking two purely negative Trinkets makes survival extremely difficult and serves as a self-imposed hard mode.

Stat Impact by Star Level

Coal removes exactly 10% from both Walk Speed and Run Speed, and 10% from Stealth. The actual numbers lost scale with your Toon's base stats at each star level. At 1-Star Movement Speed the loss is small in absolute terms (Walk drops from 10 to 9, Run from 20 to 18) but at 5-Star the raw numbers are larger (Walk drops from 20 to 18, Run from 30 to 27, Stealth from 20 to 18). Even at 5-Star, Pebble and Bassie without any other Trinket equipped are only able to out-walk Twisteds slower than or equal to the chasing speed of most Common Twisteds, meaning Coal's penalty pushes even fast Toons below safe out-walking thresholds.

Trivia

Coal holds several unusual distinctions among all Trinkets in the game.

  • Coal is the second Trinket that is purely disadvantageous to equip, with the first being Brick.
  • This is also the first Trinket that decreases Stealth, with the second being Scrapbook. Coincidentally, they are both Holiday Trinkets.
  • Coal is the second Stealth-affecting Trinket overall. The first is Diary (which increases Stealth), and the third is Scrapbook.
  • Coal is the second Trinket to share a name with its respective Toon, after Vee's Remote for Vee and Dandy Plush for Dandy. However, it is the first and currently only Trinket to have the exact same title as its respective Toon.
  • Coal was originally made because players wanted a way to distract better by lowering their Stealth, and Qwel added reduced Movement Speed as a downside.
  • Coal originally reduced your Movement Speed by 20%, but it was lowered to 10% in the 2025 Christmas Event.
  • Using Coal with Scrapbook and combining it with Shrimpo will increase his Stealth Stat to -84.645 instead, because if a negative number is subtracted by a percentage, the number will instead increase. This is high enough for Shrimpo to have higher Stealth than Pebble with his Ability and Air Horn combined.

FAQ

How do you get the Coal Trinket in Dandy's World?

The Coal Trinket is obtained by achieving 100% Research on Twisted Coal. It is a limited Holiday Trinket that was available during the Christmas Event, added on January 10, 2025 alongside Festive Lights, Peppermint Icing, and Toy Kit.

Is the Coal Trinket worth using?

No. Coal is a purely disadvantageous Trinket that decreases both Stealth by 10% and Walk and Run Speed by 10%. Even pairing it with Dog Plush cannot fully offset the speed loss. It is only used for self-imposed challenge runs, typically combined with Brick while playing as Shrimpo, Soulvester, or Connie.

Can Dog Plush cancel out Coal's speed penalty?

Not fully. Dog Plush provides a 10% Walk Speed increase, but it still leaves a -1% Walk Speed debuff when combined with Coal, and does nothing to offset the -10% Run Speed penalty. This means you remain slower during sprinting chases, which is the most critical survival scenario.
