Tapes – Dandy's World Guide

Tapes are the in-round currency used only during said round. Tapes are earned by finding them on Floors, completing Machines, using Toon Abilities, encountering Twisteds, using Items, and equipping certain Trinkets. They can be used to purchase from Dandy's Shop in the Elevator.

Ways to Gain Tapes

Tapes can be earned through multiple methods during a round. Floor pickups and Machine completions are the most reliable sources, while Toon Abilities, Twisted encounters, and Items provide supplementary income. Understanding every source is important for Toons whose Abilities consume Tapes, since running out mid-run can leave your team without heals or key utility.

  • Collected from the floor: 5 Tapes per pickup (was 10 Tapes before v0.2)
  • Completing Machines: 1 Tape per 10% Machine completion (10 Tapes per Machine maximum)
  • Surviving Floors: 10 Tapes awarded when the team enters the Elevator
  • Using a Toon's non-Passive Ability for the first time per Floor: 3 Tapes (was 5 before v0.2)
  • Using Squirm's Distressed Delicacy Ability: 5 Tapes on every use, not just the first per Floor, making Squirm uniquely efficient at generating Tapes
  • Encountering a Twisted: 5 Tapes once per Floor for each distinct Twisted encountered (was 3 before v0.9.1)
  • Pebble's Fetch! Ability and Coal's Scout Ability can highlight Tapes on the ground, making them easier to spot and collect before leaving a Floor

Items, Trinkets, and Cards

Using Items rewards Tapes based on the Item's rarity tier. Higher-rarity Items yield more Tapes when consumed, but players should weigh the Tape gain against the Item's strategic value before using it purely for currency. Certain Trinkets grant a lump sum of Tapes at the start of a run, while specific Cards award Tapes to the entire lobby when chosen during a vote.

Source Type Tapes Earned
Common Items Item 2 Tapes
Uncommon Items Item 3 Tapes
Rare Items Item 5 Tapes
Very Rare Items Item 8 Tapes
Ultra Rare Items Item 10 Tapes
Coin Purse Trinket 30 Tapes
Fancy Purse Trinket 100 Tapes
Spare Change / Penny Pincher Card 45 Tapes (was 25 before the card rework)

Obtainment Tips

This section mainly applies to Toons that require Tapes for their Abilities, such as Sprout, Ginger, Blot, or Teagan. Your best way to collect Tapes is always to pick them up from the floor, as they are guaranteed on every Floor and give 5 Tapes each. If playing supporter Toons, especially healers such as Sprout or Ginger, you can ask teammates to leave unwanted Items and Tapes on the Floor for you. Having Bassie on your team helps as she can pick up Items quickly with her high speed and stamina, plus her extra inventory slot lets her ferry Items to you. Extraction-focused play is also valuable: taking Items like Jumper Cable or Extraction Speed Candy and completing Machines yields both Machine-completion Tapes and the Item-use Tapes simultaneously.

  • If you find valuable Items like Health Kit, Smoke Bomb, or Box o' Chocolates, prioritize saving them for the team over consuming for Tapes.
  • Using extraction Trinkets such as Vee's Remote can give 10 Tapes from a single Machine completion, making Machine work doubly rewarding.
  • If a healer who uses Tapes is present, leave candies and Tapes for them unless permitted otherwise, since a well-funded healer benefits the entire team.
  • You may ask distractors to bring Twisteds to the Elevator after the team enters, then aggro them for 5 Tapes per Twisted. Before v0.9.4, Rodger earned 20 Tapes per encounter instead of the standard 5.
  • Trinkets like Fancy Purse and Coin Purse grant extra Tapes at run start, but take up a Trinket slot for the rest of the run without further use. Their value is mostly luck-based, depending on whether Dandy sells useful Items at the start. Testing shows more than 100 Tapes can be gathered in just the first 3 Floors, making Fancy Purse often unnecessary even for healers.
  • Remember that Dandy's Shop only opens when the next Floor number is even, so you do not need to stockpile Tapes every single Floor. Plan purchases around shop availability.
  • These tips target the fastest possible Tape accumulation. Regular gameplay still generates enough Tapes for most Toons, since Dandy's Shop appears only every other Floor with no guarantee of useful stock.

Tape Spawning Formula

The number of Tape pickups that spawn on each Floor scales with the lobby's player count. Larger lobbies see more Tapes to offset the higher demand for Items from Dandy's Shop. Each individual Tape pickup is worth 5 Tapes, so the total available per Floor ranges from 15 to 30.

Player Count # of Tapes Tape Total
1-2 3 15
3-4 4 20
5-6 5 25
7-8 6 30

Trivia

Notable facts and version history details about Tapes.

  • The only Twisted capable of stealing Tapes from Players is Twisted Teagan.
  • Only Blot, Ginger, Sprout, and Teagan use Tapes for their Abilities. Sprout and Ginger's Abilities cost the most at 100 Tapes each; Blot's costs the least at 10 Tapes.
  • Before v0.10.1, Teagan's Ability also cost 100 Tapes, but it was reduced to 75.
  • Before v0.14.1, Ginger's Ability did not cost any Tapes at all.
  • Tapes found on the floor used to give 10 Tapes before being changed to 5 in v0.2. In the same update, Ability-use Tapes dropped from 5 to 3.
  • In v0.9.1, Tapes earned from first-time Twisted encounters on a Floor were increased from 3 to 5.
  • Rodger used to earn 20 Tapes per Twisted encounter instead of the standard 5, but this was normalized in v0.9.4.
  • In v0.11.1 the Tape model was updated to look more like a VHS Tape. The new model features textures on both sides.
  • The Tapes possibly contain recordings of the now-cancelled Dandy's World Show, as they calm down Dandy and prevent him from becoming Twisted Dandy.
  • The Tape collection audio comes from Phasmophobia.
  • Picking up or purchasing many Tapes at once plays a distinct sound effect, different from the standard single-pickup audio.
